about

“Part road movie, part spiritual-slapstick, Nick Cave’s Bar is an excursion that will resonate with anyone who ever deepened their path in a pursuit to the conclusion of their own poor decisions. An unassuming, meandering tale of what happens when good sense is ejected in favor of higher purpose. You will laugh, you will cry, you will scratch your head in confusion. Like all worthwhile pilgrimages the destination is not the reward and the journey never ends.” - Andrew Shaw, The Silent Academy

In June 1999, my best friend and I flew to Germany to find the bar I’d heard Nick Cave owned in Berlin. In our heads we’d get off the plane, ask ‘which way to Nick Cave’s bar?’, and then spend the rest of our time living it up there. Instead what followed were nine days of confusion, thwarted plans, and perpetual drunken misery, including a two-and-a-half day hallucinatory absinthe hangover that saw us wind up in Prague.

A story I've long wanted to tell and on the 20th anniversary in 2019, I began performing a live show of it. The first two performances were in Brooklyn, NY and Somerville, MA and I then planned on continuing the show after I moved to Los Angeles, ideally booking shows around the world. Since live performance isn't going to be possible for a while, I thought it best to get the story out there. Luckily, my friend Tom Derwent happened to record the Brooklyn show on his phone. There's video of tracks 1 & 3. If you buy the album and want to see them, message me and I'll send you the videos.

I've also written the story up in a 74 page book that goes into much more detail. Quite a separate beast from the more comedic live show. The 'Nick Cave's Bar' book will be available worldwide in December 2020.

Thanks for listening
